Sometimes we don’t realize we’re under spiritual attack–
Hold that thought, and notice that it is a we mentality that Paul uses when writing. Ephesians 6 is not suddenly addressed to one person. “Bob, be strong in the Lord.” Nope. In the NKJV, it’s “Finally, my brethren…” (an all inclusive term, in this case after having written to husbands, wives, and children). Paul’s saying, “Listen up, y’all. Everybody’s in on this–including me. I’m gonna say ‘our’ and I’m gonna get specific about myself at the end. This ain’t no game. This here’s battle, and we’re in it together. We all gotta do this.”
Point being, if you’re under attack, you’re not alone. Other people in your life are under attack too, whether you see it or not. DON’T go it alone. Stand firm TOGETHER. Do all this stuff with somebody:
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.
Put on the full armor of God,
so that you will be able to stand firm
against the schemes of the devil.
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood,
but against the rulers,
against the powers,
against the world forces of this darkness,
against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Therefore, take up the full armor of God,
so that you will be able to resist in the evil day,
and having done everything,
to stand firm.
Stand firm therefore,
having girded your loins with truth,
and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith
with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
And take the helmet of salvation,
and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit,
and with this in view,
be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,
and pray on my behalf,
that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth,
to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel,
for which I am an ambassador in chains;
that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly,
as I ought to speak.
Lord God, thank You that we are not meant to go it alone. Help us begin with our families. Teach us to stand firm together in the power of Your might. Reveal to us the schemes set against us. Together, let us take up Your armor that we may resist and stand firm. Anchor us in Your truth, make us pure and holy and righteous, and prepare us to share Your gospel. Let us have and share joint faith together, lifting it together, guarding ourselves together that the flames of the evil one may not get to us. Protect our minds with the knowledge and logic and facts of Your salvation. Let us wield the sword of the Spirit–Your word–by Your leading and Your training. Encourage us to pray at all times in the Spirit, and to be on the alert not just for ourselves but for all the saints. Engage us in praying on behalf of those who preach Your gospel. May we all be bold to speak.
